Significance of Intracranial Pressure Monitoring after Early Decompressive Craniectomy in Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

OBJECTIVE Early decompressive craniectomy (DC) has been used as the first stage treatment to prevent secondary injuries in cases of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Postoperative management is the major factor that influences outcome. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of postoperative management, using intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and including consecutive DC on t...

[Does decompressive craniectomy improve other parameters besides ICP? Effects of the decompressive craniectomy on tissular pressure?].

Second level therapeutic maneuvres for controlling intracranial hypertension (ICH) proposed by the European Brain Injury Consortium and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons include barbiturates, moderate hypothermia and more recently the decompressive craniectomy (DC).In most patients, ICP can be maintained below 25 mmHg after a DC. However, the exact effect of DC on brain oxygenat...

THE EFFICACY OF DECOMPRESSIVE CRANIECTOMY IN TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WITH MASSIVE HEMISPHERIC CEREBRAL INFARCTION

Massive cerebral infarction is often accompanied by early death, secondary to brain edema and trans-tentorial herniation. Several reports indicate beneficial effects of decompressive craniectomy in this situation, but the efficacy of this procedure is still a matter of debate. A n experimental study in a period of3 years was done on2 3 patients with brain edema due to massive cerebral infa...

Effective ICP reduction by decompressive craniectomy in patients with severe traumatic brain injury treated by an ICP-targeted therapy.

Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major causes of death in younger age groups. In Umeå, Sweden, an intracranial pressure (ICP) targeted therapy protocol, the Lund concept, has been used in treatment of severe TBI since 1994. Decompressive craniectomy is used as a protocol-guided treatment step. The primary aim of the investigation was to study the effect of craniectomy on ICP ch...
